Staunton police have arrested a former Augusta County 911 dispatcher on sex charges in an online sting.

Alvin E. Yoder, 51, of the 1200 block of Cold Springs Road, Stuarts Draft, arrived early Sunday at Grace Christian High School expecting to meet a girl he thought to be 13, police said.

“When he got there, of course, there was no 13-year-old girl,” Staunton police spokeswoman Lisa Klein said Monday.

Instead, there was a 6-foot-2 policeman, Klein said.

Authorities charged Yoder with two counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor and two counts of using electronic means for a child-sex crime.

For years, Yoder worked part-time as an Augusta County 911 dispatcher, county Personnel Director Faith Souder said. He left the job Sept. 21 for “personnel reasons,” Souder said.

Authorities transported Yoder to Middle River Regional Jail in Verona. He is free on bond.

More than a half-dozen area men have been snagged in similar law enforcement online-chat operations this year.
