Dog breeder pleads to cruelty charges

STAUNTON — A Stuarts Draft dog breeder pleaded guilty Thursday to 100 assorted misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty and failure to provide adequate care to his dogs.

Kyle N. Brydge, 45, owner of Oak Leaf Kennel, was ordered to pay $10,890 in restitution over the next 10 years and barred from breeding dogs, according to court records. His guilty pleas came less then a week after he filed a notice that he would appeal a court order barring him from owning companion animals.

Last month, Brydge gave up 99 mostly small-breed dogs from his kennel on China Clay Road after a routine inspection by state and local authorities.

A subsequent court order stated that Brydge and his wife failed to provide adequate care, food, water and shelter for the animals. Seized dogs were sent by the dozens to animal shelters across the state, where many have been adopted, authorities said.

Of 102 total charges, Brydge pleaded guilty to 70 counts of cruelty to animals; 30 counts of failure by a pet shop owner to provide adequate care; and one count each of failure to maintain proper business records and failure to properly license a dog older than 4 months.

Brydge operated Oak Leaf Kennel on a 17-acre property, for which he’d obtained a special-use permit from Augusta County.
