Leader addresses national unrest

Conservative activist and former presidential candidate Alan Keyes offered his prodigious speaking talents Tuesday night to help raise money for ComfortCare Women’s Health.

The organization is a non-profit medical clinic in Waynesboro and Staunton that helps women with life choices, pregnancy confirmation and peer counseling on pregnancy options.

While Keyes was focused on helping ComfortCare, he did express great fear about the state of the country.

He said the current unrest could be “the greatest crisis ever in the history of the American Republic.”

“People are angry and dismayed and don’t know where to go,’’ Keyes said.

Keyes does not just blame the administration of President Barack Obama, but what he described as a group of American elites, ruling the country.

“There are czars, bureaucrats and a handful of politicians who are deciding health care,’’ Keyes said.

Generations will be “enslaved’’ by the debt Washington is accumulating, he said.

Keyes, a former Republican, believes the most immediate result will be a loss of Democratic control of Congress in 2010.

But he said the alternative is not that palatable to the American public.

“A lot of people have watched what has happened and are not sure if there is any use in electing Republicans,’’ he said.

Former President George W. Bush showed his betrayal of the free market when he signed the federal bailout a year ago, Keyes said.

For more than 30 minutes at the Best Western Inn and Conference Center in Waynesboro, Keyes told the supporters of ComfortCare the importance of preserving children and preventing abortion.

He told the audience that the inalienable rights given each person by God are basic. He praised two young women who spoke to the audience Tuesday night about their decision to not have an abortion and preserve life.

After his speech, Keyes said while the inalienable rights each person has come from a source beyond the government, those rights are the foundation for government “by the people and for the people.”
