The News Virginian captured 12 awards in the Virginia Press Association’s 2008 news contest, including six first-place awards.
The awards were announced Saturday night at the VPA’s awards banquet at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott.
“We’re very pleased with the recognition we received across every aspect of our coverage, from news to sports to photography and page design,” said Lee Wolverton, editor and general manager of The News Virginian. “This recognition is reflective of the energy and dedication our staff pours into their work every day.”
The News Virginian staff received a first-place award for breaking news writing for its coverage of the Interstate 64 shooting case a year ago.
Multiple awards went to staff photographer Rosanne Weber, The News Virginian’s sports staff and staff writer Tony Gonzalez.
Weber captured first-place awards in the general news photo and feature photo categories and shared with Jim Sacco a second-place award for a photo illustration.
The News Virginian’s sports staff earned three awards. Robert Sisk, Corine Gatti and Sacco took first place for sports pages. Gatti received a second place for sports writing portfolio and Sacco a third place for sports column writing.
Gonzalez earned two second-place awards for feature writing and public safety writing. Staff writer Jimmy LaRoue received a third-place award for government writing.
Copy editor Amy Poszywak garnered a first-place award for page design and graphic designer Ross Bradley took first-place honors for informational graphics.
