A Virginia State Police bomb squad is on its way to SunTrust bank on Broad Street in Waynesboro after a robbery in which the suspect left a device in the building, indicating it was an explosive, police said.
Shortly before 3:45 today, Waynesboro police responded to the bank after three tellers triggered an alarm, police said. The suspect entered the bank, demanded an undisclosed amount of money and left a device in the building.
"Apparently, the suspect left a device of some sort inside ... and a note," said Sgt. Kelly Walker of the Waynesboro Police.
The suspect left on foot and it is unknown if there was a getaway car waiting for him. Police responded within a minute, authorities said.
Police are still on the scene and have created a "safety zone" around the bank, diverting traffic off Broad Street. A State Police bomb squad in on its way.
