Two of the five people injured in a multi-vehicle wreck near Deerfield over the weekend remained hospitalized Sunday at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Marti Krupinski, 50, of Verona, and a passenger on the 2009 Harley-Davidson motorcycle Krupinksi was driving, Christine Hinkle, 43, were both listed in fair condition at U.Va. on Sunday, according to hospital spokesman Peter Jump.

Three other people injured in the accident were treated and released from Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville.

Trooper Timothy Simmons of the Virginia State Police said a 1997 Toyota Tacoma driven by Sean Stanton, 33, of Monterey, was driving on Route 250 westbound Saturday around 2 p.m. when he came into a curve, ran off the right side of the road, and, while overcorrecting, his vehicle collided with three motorcycles heading eastbound.

Simmons said Stanton was charged with second-offense DUI.

Doug Morris, fire chief of the Deerfield Valley Volunteer Fire Department, which along with Virginia State Police responded to the incident, said the accident took place about 1.5 miles beyond the intersection of Route 629, not far from Shenandoah Mountain near the Highland County-Augusta County line.

The lead motorcycle in the group was driven by Krupinski, and the two motorcycles following that one were driven by females, Simmons said.

“They all were injured and a couple of them had serious injuries,” Simmons said.

Krupinski and Hinkle were airlifed to U.Va. Medical Center in Charlottesville, two people were airlifted to Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville, while another was taken by ambulance to AMC.

“It’s very rare for two helicopters to be called out for one accident,” Simmons said.

He said the helicopters used a nearby yard to land and transport the patients.

The driver of the pickup truck, Simmons said, suffered the least-serious injuries.

The motorcycle riders were part of a large contingent raising money for kids, Simmons said.
