An alert bus driver at R.E. Lee High School spotted a firearm in a man’s car Tuesday afternoon.
Staunton police responded to the school at about 2:50 p.m., finding Wayman Cecil Brock, 70, with an open beer and a 9 mm handgun in a holster, and Kim Darlene Schutz, 51, with a .22-caliber handgun, Staunton police Officer Lisa Klein said.
Each face charges of possessing a weapon on school property. Brock faces an open container citation and Schutz an additional charge of possessing a concealed weapon. Brock had a concealed weapon permit, so was not charged with that violation, Klein said.
Police said the arrested pair were at the school to pick up a student. Klein said incident reports are not complete and the relationship is unknown. The group told police they were headed to practice target shooting.
